The Refuge School was established on the 1st July 2007.
The 10 children that are students at the Refuge School and whom we care for at the moment are between the ages of 7 - 15. They mainly come from poverty-stricken families from the village of "Ganeshapuram". These children were considered curses by their families and their parents treated them like animals. The people in the village didn't accept them at all.
If the Refuge School had not been established and provided a safe and nurturing environment for these children to thrive in, their lives would have been miserable. Most of them would have continued to be chained down, placed in solitary confinement or sent begging on the street. Some would have even died for lack of care and nutrition.
Schools of this nature are now an integral part of the national vision of our Sri Lankan church, because we want to see many schools for special needs children established in all 25 districts. We presently have invitations to start another school 15km from the Refuge School and another in the southern province.
