The Dorcas Project

The Dorcas Project in Valachennai is partly a shelter for women and who were left widowed and fatherless as a result of the 30 year civil war. This project was started in January 2007.

This project provides for these women a place of safe refuge and sanctuary when they have nowhere else to go. The Dorcas Project also aims to provide these widows with proper vocational skills that will allow them to support themselves and their children without having to rely on a provider, giving them a new independence.

Presently, the Church building serves as the training center, where the women are taught to sew, paint, hairstyle and bake which will earn them a living.

Currently, the Dorcas Project serves 10 young widows (4 of whom have children) and 31 young girls.

However, the Agapao Foundation strives to help many more, and we aim to serve 100 women each year (30 residential), as well as start 25 centers just like the Dorcas House throughout the Country.
