The UN agencies say the second wave of floods was worse than the previous round and led to widespread crop losses causing the almost total loss of the investments towards this season's cultivation. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), paddy and other field crops planted in Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts have completely been lost.
The floods mainly affected the Jaffna, Vanni & East area of the Island which is just recovering from the devastation caused by the 30 year Civil War which ended in 2009. Resettlement and redevelopment has been ongoing in those areas and much of the redevelopment was brought to a standstill and even destroyed in the wake of the floods.
Many churches and over 700 Christian families were greatly affected by the floods in those areas. The Foundation was able to provide relief for our Christian brothers and sisters in the hardest hit areas by providing food and other essentials at the time. We were also able to provide relief to those who were held in a shelters by providing three meals a day only for a few days due to fund restrictions.
Currently, rebuilding efforts have begun by the army and the government to repair great damage done to the infrastructure in the greater town areas. As mentioned above, many of our people have lost their sources of income. There is great need in those areas for the rebuilding of homes and redevelopment which we are currently raising funds for.
If you would like to donate or be a part in some way of the rebuilding effort that is being done in the aforementioned areas, please contact blessie@agapaofoundation.org for bank details or please refer to our HOME page for a link to making an online donation via PayPal.
