History of The Agapao Foundation

Rev. Dr. Leslie Keegel and his wife Belen have been serving the Lord in Sri Lanka fulfilling his divine commission,"Go ye and make disciples of all nations",since August 1981.

Leslie and Belen Keegel first met Jonathan and Theresa Lee, chairman of Compare Business Systems in the year 2000. Both Jonathan and Theresa always have had a heart of supporting needy children. They were already supporting Orphanages in Ukraine and Mexico.

In 1983 riots broke out across the nation of Sri Lanka, leading subsequently to a bloody Civil War which lasted more than two and half decades.

In December 2004 the Tsunami devastated two-thirds of Sri Lanka's shoreline.

Both the Civil War and the Tsunami took the lives of over 150,000 people, and left many thousands as widows and orphans. Many thousands remain maimed, distressed, sick and helpless. There are around 70,000 people who still remain as refugees needing shelter and pure drinking water.

The word "Agapao" was birthed in the heart of Jonathan in the year 2001. It was conceived out of a revelation of God expressing His “love in action”. Love contained in one’s heart not expressed or put into action is as good as dead.

Since then Jonathan had a growing passion in his heart to show God’s love in action to the poor and needy of the world.  Agapao – which means love in action was Jonathan’s heart cry and passion as he prayed and strategized to show God’s love in practical terms to the poor and the helpless of the world.

Dr Leslie Keegel an ordained minister of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel since 1981, serving as President of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Sri Lanka met Jonathan Lee in 2000. As both men met and began sharing their hearts with each other they realized that they were not only like minded but shared the same "Agapao" passion.

Jonathan Lee immediately started to support the ministry of Evangelism, Church Planting and the humanitarian ministries of the Sri Lankan Foursquare Gospel Church.

After a decade of partnership with the Sri Lankan Foursquare Gospel Church, Jonathan Lee and Dr. Leslie Keegel registered the Agapao Foundation in September of 2009.

The mission of the Agapao Foundation is to be the hands and feet of Jesus to the poor, widows, orphans, disabled, victims of war and natural disaster by showing God’s love in action through compassion.  

The Vision of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Sri Lanka on the other hand is to see the National transformation of the Island nation. Through our ministry to the poor, widows, disabled, victims of war and natural disasters  by  establishing orphanages/children’s homes, widows centers, schools for special needs children, and Vocational Training Institutes and many other humanitarian services, the Church seeks to transform the nation of Sri Lanka.

We are needing continued support for 5 childrens homes with a total number of 80 children. Two widows centers, a school for children with special needs, 2 vocational training institutes and 500 children through foster care.

We conduct medical camps to remote war-affected areas where medical help is not easily accessible to people. A recent medical camp held in July 2010, saw 10,831 people served. We are in the process of digging tube wells and providing micro finance help to the people living in tsunami and war-affected areas of Sri Lanka.
